603 Upstairs is a multi-purpose live-work space-within-a-space at The Silent Barn. Our tiny apartment functions as a performance, practice space, place for meetings, classroom, daytime office, makeshift karaoke spot, gallery for visual artists, and more. We currently are displaying work by NYC artists Tristan Perich and India K, as well as a rotating curated zine wall. We have decided against having any furniture in order to make the most of our home, expanding the boundaries of all that can happen with limited space.

WE—Sessa Englund, Ø.K. Fox, Sarah Wang, Shaina Yang, Zaria Poem, and JinHee Kwak pay $360.80 a month to program this room for The Silent Barn. We spend additional money on maintenance and materials. We spend time on labor, emotional labor, research, writing, and talking. This is balanced with our other work, other rent, and other stressors.
We’re dedicated to sustaining a gallery run by low income people to showcase low income people and otherly marginalized groups. Low income as in low income, zero assets, zero trust funds, zero fucking beer sponsorships.
We want this gallery to be a vivid expression of the experimental and non-hierarchical nature of the Silent Barn. We want to embrace our role within a larger organism. We want to continue the work Silent Barn has put in to becoming a space that addresses gentrification and racial and gender disparages. We are queer woman and non-binary people of different racial backgrounds and that’s who we will be showcasing. We value representation, accessibility, and fighting dominant power structures within the art world.

"The Silent Barn is a multi-faceted arts group that recently took over a building in Bushwick with such a variety of spaces that they were forced to expand their umbrella to cover not only a residential, performing arts and music spaces to include garden, recording studios, art studios, galleries workshops and offices. Still in its nascent phase, I helped plan for, then designed and managed the build out of the spaces, which will inevitably be a project without end. "

Ryan Soper
100% hand crafted in New York. Adopting a mode of up-cycling and reuse the money I save on material overhead I directly deposit into my own sweat equity at the sewing machine to produce detailed, hand crafted objects that would break the bottom line if I was using all new material. I’m currently focusing on limited editions that intersect different utilitarian niches. The urban dweller is the entry point of any product I design. Cycling friendly features. I’m always game to add new products to my list of designs. I hesitate to take on fully custom product requests but as more people make suggestions things will rise to the top. I always have a running “next on the list” type structure to my design strategy.

T-Shirt Pop Up Shop
The band t-shirt is a time honored tradition that takes a simple shirt and evolves it into a peace of cultural memorabilia. The growing practice of silk screening has allowed local independant bands to create wearable art that ranges from simple statement to elaborate design. Our studio will celebrate the art of the band shirt while providing a platform to sell shirts outside of shows. We will enable artists to sell merch beyond the confines of their performances, and allow the community to access to band t-shirts from bands they love and shows they may have missed.
