Art Under Fire: New Ukrainian Artists Collective

Sat, May 21 '16 – Sun, May 22 '16

1pm6pm

Art Under Fire is an exhibit of young Ukrainian artists. Their work depicts the emotions and experiences caused by the dramatic violence in their homeland beginning with the Euromaidan demonstrations in the Winter of 2013 through the influx of Russian troops.

The exhibit tells the story of how these young artists kept working, kept creating, while surrounded by fire. Despite personal danger and the destruction around them, they continued to create.

These young artists were born in the 1990s and became the first generation to grow up in an independent Ukraine. Key cultural elements that influenced their generation and created a huge social gap in post-Soviet Union society were the absence of political dictatorship and artistic censorship.

They unite in the belief that Ukraine needs a new contemporary culture encapsulating a free state of self-aware people.

Art Under Fire is the product of belief in the ability to change.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATORS

In a world where contemporary art is inseparable from its social message, institutional censorship in Ukraine was yet to be broken.

New Ukrainian Artists Collective (NUAC) is an emergent, Kyiv-based arts collective that has taken the lead in establishing intercultural dialogue and representing life in post-2014 Revolution Ukraine. Inspired by Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage as well as the current political situation, NUAC artists have created poignant and intense works of art, media, and craft.

NUAC began in 2007 as a group of art students at the National Academy of Arts in Kiev as a response to rigid academic rules created by a classically Soviet-trained faculty.

Despite their underground nature, NUAC members have been exhibited and recognized by major Ukrainian art institutions: Mystetsky Arsenal Museum, M-17 gallery, and the Golden Section Art Auction. NUAC has also hosted a number of a non-gallery shows (URBAN SHЬІT, etc.).

Members of NUAC are the proud recipients of international European art scholarships, residency programs, and competition prizes. They are united in the belief that Ukraine needs a new contemporary culture that represents a free state of self-aware people. (Visit: newukrainianartcollective.org)
